How to Check Coolant Levels

What is coolant? This fluid transfers heat and regulates the temperature of your vehicle’s engine block and parts. Whether you drive an SUV or a luxury car, engine coolant is critical. Engine coolant has an additive that ensures it won’t freeze below 0 degrees Celsius and doesn’t overheat above 100 degrees Celsius. Learn how to check your coolant levels with the team at Titan Automotive and contact our service team with any questions!

What to Look for

If you know what coolant is, it’s important to understand how to keep an eye on it as part of routine maintenance. You don’t have to open the radiator cap to check your current levels. Instead, check the markings on the side of your reservoir. When the liquid reaches the “full” marking line, you’re set. If the level is lower than the full line, remove the radiator cap and add the coolant or a 50/50 mix of coolant and water. Read the bottle to see if it’s premixed, however, it’s also a good idea to inspect the hoses connected to the radiator for leaks or damage. When adding more liquid to the cooling system, be sure your engine has cooled. Don’t open your radiator cap if the engine is still hot.

When to See a Service Technician

Coolant is thinner than oil but thicker than water. If you’re noticing a sludgy appearance to the liquid, schedule service ASAP. There’s a good chance your vehicle has an internal gasket leak. Driving around Regina is possible, but a leaking gasket will drain your coolant quickly. This means your engine is at risk of overheating and being severely damaged.

When to Change Coolant

As you drive in the Saskatoon-area, your coolant levels will deplete. It’s a good idea to check your cooling system every three to six months. Usually, the liquid is blue, green, yellow, or red. If it’s brownish or colourless, flush the system and replace the fluid immediately.
